Scotty Peek, Painting What He Knows
To accompany our Scotty Peek Week (I like the ring that has to it), here is a quick interview Scotty did for us. Enjoy! From the beginning— Where are you from and how did you get into art? What are your beginnings in the art world? I'm from Southern Alabama - Dozier and Andalusia area. I grew up in a family of truck drivers and spent a lot of my youth in the moving cab of an 18-wheeler. I sometimes wonder if those long hours staring out at the passing landscapes play into

Laurie McIntosh- A Little Bit Of Everything
Prologue: This is an interview I did with Laurie in August/ September 2022 (it's now February 2023) for her Artist Spotlight Week. Shortly after, there was a bug in our blog planner that held my convo notes captive and prevented me from editing and posting. The bug is finally fixed! Anyway, better late than never, right? So, without further ado.... I first asked Laurie for a little bit of background; where she was from and what were her art beginnings. Laurie grew up in Green

Millie Gosch- Painting in Haiku
Embarrassingly, I didn’t know of Millie Gosch before Camellia Art began representing her in January 2020. But, when she sent her first batch of pieces to us, I was struck! Growing up in Bluffton, the Lowcountry landscape is already one of my favorite muses ever. But I was immediately taken with Millie’s striking and fun color choices and the textured brushwork in her pieces- It was so unexpected… A more contemporary translation of Impressionism… I fell in love with her work.

Carylon Ann Cooper, The Spirited Artist
In my opinion, Carylon Ann Cooper creates some of the most joyous pieces in our gallery’s collection. The energy and emotion that emits from her bounding, panting dogs always brings a smile to everyone’s faces. Her cows and horses are endearing. Her boats: peaceful. Barns: nostalgic. She describes her self as a minimalist. I’m guessing this is because she doesn’t fixate on minute details. Rather, I imagine, she paints with more explosive energy, allowing her to create these f

Louanne LaRoche, The Ritualist
Louanne's Portrait by Carolyn Males If you know Bluffton/ Hilton Head art, you likely know Louanne LaRoche. Growing up in Bluffton, she is probably the first local artist I can remember. She shared a studio space with my piano teacher when I was around 9 or 10. I remember thinking her art was so interesting- she had created a number of characters, but they were represented over and over throughout the work she had there. Themes repeated over and over but in many different wa

Brucie Holler, The Poetic Mark Maker
Continuing on with our centralized focus on one of our artists, this month's Artist Spotlight is dedicated to abstract artist, Brucie Holler. Brucie has been with Camellia Art for about 12 years and is well known and loved by Lowcountry locals. Abstract art is so interesting to me because it relies so much on the viewer's perspective and understanding. The subject or meaning of the piece is rarely found in recognizable forms, but rather in colors, lines, textures, etc. The a

Marc Hanson, The Translator
We began showing Marc Hanson’s pieces in June of this year and it’a taken no time at all for him to become a highly sought after artist. If you read our blog from a few weeks ago- referencing Marc and fellow Plein air painter Dottie Leatherwood, you will know that Marc is above and beyond the quintessential painter. He truly lives and breathes his art and his process, but not just as a professional artist… as a human, down deep in his roots. Anyways, I’ll let you find out mor

Dottie Leatherwood, The Storyteller
