Rex Hunter

Born. August 31, 1960.

Rex was born the son of a one star rear admiral. He served as an A-10 crew chief in the United States Air Force for 6 years after graduating high school.  After his time in the Air Force, he attended Mary Washington College where he majored in historical preservation and restoration with a minor in art history.

After graduating in 1988, Rex returned home to the North Carolina to work in insurance restoration after Hurricane Hugo swept through his home town of Charlotte. After several years working in insurance restoration, he became fascinated with painting and faux finishing work- two things be quickly mastered and spent years working in.

Come the mid 1990’s, Rex expanded his restoration interests and abilities, and began remodeling and restoring old bathrooms and kitchens, which then lead to restoring entire homes. He started his own LLC in Charlotte with some friends working to restore old houses, making them unique, bespoke homes.
It was while he was working in these homes, that he began his furniture making journey. He preferred original and higher quality pieces for his homes over mass produced items.

After the real estate market crash of 2007, Rex moved to Hilton Head to use a friends wood shop to work on his client’s pieces. His new work brought quick notoriety, earning him more clients and features in local publications.

He has since further expanded into working closely with galleries and interior designers. “I’m obviously having the time of my life!”

“Each day, I try to conceive of a piece that has as much artistic meaning as it does functionality. I use the term ‘functioning art’ I’m always trying to build new pieces to satisfy my curiosity.”
